Wednesday and Friday Meetings

Hello everyone hope those of you who participated in the high school camp had an amazing time. Im personally excited to be attending the Middle School camp this weekend. Id like to share with you all how our meet went on Wednesday during lunch. Were getting a lot of returning students for every meeting which is great and they seem to enjoy the team building activities. One of the things I believe we're still struggling in with is the fact that we don't get as much time with the students since it's during their lunch. Our Wednesday after school meeting was a little challenging as we don't have such a large number as we did the first time. The reason being that a lot of the students have to do after school tutoring or intervention programs and they are mandatory unlike our mentor meetings. Last meeting Pahnia and I decided to purchase composition books in order to motivate the students to reflect on paper rather then verbally as we were doing before. We have also implemented the idea of having word of the day as there school uses this concept and the words we choose deal with different aspects of the mentoring philosophy. Fridays meeting went great we meet during their lunch and since Panhia wasnt present I conducted the meeting and the activity we did was The Attention game. It was challenging at the beginning but once the students got the hang of it they really seemed to enjoy it. The five students attending the camp are really excited and I'm trying to figure out what will happen with our lunch meeting this Friday since we usually meet from 11am- 1pm.
Hope everyone is having a great week....

Firebaugh High School

Today's visit to Firebaugh High School went very good. Our seniors are excited and getting their scholarship application for ELF filed out. We have been encouraging them to apply for this scholarship and today we went over personal statements. We expect most students to have the applications ready by next week. The students really impress Maria and I because many have taken our advise and written letters to their teachers/counselors requesting a letter of recommendation instead of verbally asking them. The students have also been getting all their paperwork ready and working on their personal statements. We have also encouraged those who are not seniors to write personal statements and resumes so they can have experience doing them. I believe that our students have a good chance in the scholarship and wish them the best;-)

Today's visit,

Today visit is another successful one although most of the students didn't make it. Yesenia and I attended the lunch and after school meeting at Kings Canyon Middle School. We did a lot of activities to break thee ice and for our students to know a little more about each others. We played
the "Name Game" and the "Things in Common". A major event we had was the "Culture Show". What we have the students do is to share something about their culture and where they came from. Yesenia and I thought that this was a good way to promote culture awareness between the
diverse group we have. Culture awareness falls under one of the LACS column. =) Anyways, the two ice breaker we had was for our students to remember each other names and to find things that they each have in common. Another thing we will keep doing is to have a daily "word of the day" for our students. We realized that it will help them learn and increase their knowledge of the different terminologies. But it wasn't just any words, we try to relate it to school, high school, college, and terms that will do them best for present/future references. Our word of the day today was "involvement". It was surprising how many of the students did not know what the word mean. They could think of other words that remind them of it but not necessary the meaning itself. Also, another thing is we are having our students do daily reflections on our meetings. We used the stipend to buy them each a composition notebook and give it to them to keep and reflect. We will collect it every Friday and read what they write in it. Besides that, we are excited for the camp because Yesenia and I are getting very comfortable with our 5 students that are going. I hope everything else is going great for everyone. Thanks Jose and Martina for the code. Yesenia and I will try to incorporate that with our students too. =)

Our mentees at Coalinga High just keep impressing us day by day! Today we attended Coalinga High and during our meeting one of our students gave us a great idea. He told us a bout a great website were the students can take a brief survey and after the survey, it will list you the top recommended colleges to attend. This student lead our whole meeting today and lead the students step by step! Jose and I just assisted the students as they worked on their survey. We recorded today's meeting; Jose will be posting it so that everyone can watch it. It was awesome!!! With the results we plan to have the students do a little research on the campuses on their on, which was also an idea that this student gave us.

If you wish to also have your mentees take this survey the website is: www.californiacolleges.edu ; after click on 'explore colleges' ; then on 'undergraduate student-campus matching assistant'
Adrian, thank you for the posting. Opportunities for AB540 students are out there and thanks to your help more of our students will have access to a University education. Great job.

Update,

Although Ms. Carrillo beat me to posting a blog about our first afterschool meeting, I will share my part of it still. LOL. =) It was a great success at Kings Canyon Middle School. We have no girls still but thee boys were awesome. I feel this great connection between Yesenia, me and the boys as they become more comfortable with us. With the activities that we have been doing, it seemed to break the ice and those that were very shy at first started to open up more now. In most of these students, I see a lot of potential in them although there are a few that we will really need to work with, we'll try our hardest. Another thing we had our students do were posters to promote our program. It was kind of like a contest where we told them that their principal will choose 2 out of the 5 and post it on their campus. Besides that, the students are good at turning their forms on time too. We have most of the forms (release & goal setting forms). Geez, I don't know what we are doing but it seems to attract the students a lot. The ones that keeps coming are those that showed up the first day we had our first meeting. We are getting a few more students because our students are recruiting their friends too of course. Now that we have a good number, the room we are currently using is getting smaller. LOL. If this continues, which I hope it will for the better, we will definetly need a bigger room. =)
I also took some pictures during our meeting and I will post them up soon.

Tranquility High

Hello mentors,
I just wanted to inform you that we had the opportunity to meet with the principal, Mr. Nichols, at Tranquility High School. Mr. Nichols was happy to see that we were there to help out the students. We got a tour of the school and got the see what could potentially be the classroom that we will be using. I cannot wait to get started.

Coalinga High

Wow! We had a great turnout last Friday on the 8Th. The students were happy to hear what we had to say and excited because camp is just around the corner. We had the opportunity to continue working on the CSU mentor account and create emails for those who did not have one.

Washington Union Mexican Food

Hey you guys,

With the 50 dollar stipend, I took three high school students to eat Mexican food across the street from the school. The students were content and shared information on their plans after graduation. Two of them will be going to Fresno City and a third to Fresno State. We had a great time and most importantly we got to know each other better. At the end we spoke about the importance of networking, and how it can benefit them in their lives.

Pictures of our Wed. Feb. 10 Meeting

Kings Canyon Middle School

Hello everyone,
Pahnia and I visited Kings Canyon today and it was our first after school meeting and it was successful!!!!!!! We had a total of fifteen students and we began with a team building activity and then gave them pizza. We had them work on posters to advertise the migrant program. They were great and really enjoyed it. Pahnia and I feel like their getting really comfortable with us because a few of the students that were shy at the beginning are really beginning to be more talkative.
I will be adding some pictures....

Kings Canyon MIddle School

Good morning everyone,
Pahnia and I have been visiting Kings Canyon Middle School and so far its been great. Last week we were there during their lunch time Wednesday and Friday and we have a good group of boys we still haven't railed any girls in. We were only able to be there Wednesday during their lunch because it was a staff day and were not allowed to have after school meetings during those days. We have been doing a lot of activities during their lunch since its such a short period and so far they've been great the students seem to like it and have fun. We have also had a great experience with the level of responsibility the students have. We had two of our students tell us in advice they weren't going to attend the lunch meetings because they had meetings with teachers and that was awesome. I also informed them during our Friday meetings that i wouldn't be able to make our lunch meetings today as i have a school event happening and i most be present. I will be their during the after school meeting today from 2:30-5:oo pm. So excited!!! I will let you guys know how our first after school meeting goes today.
Have a great rest of the week.

Parlier After School Mentoring Program

Wow! So far the after school mentoring program has been a great success because students are really motivated to do great things. Almost everyone that has been coming has signed up for one scholarship or more. Apart from that everyone has already registered for at least one college, filled out FASA forms, completed A-G requirements forms and are now encouraging other students to do the same. I am really proud of these students, they are true role models!!! Here is a pic of a couple of them.

hola a todos :)

Adrian and I visited our seniors from Parlier. We gave them some scholarship application. We also read all the requirements and eligibility criteria for the scholarships que les llevamos. We explain to them lo que es un statement of purpose y lo que son cartas de recomendacion.
ahhh I also want to thanks Parlier's principle for the snacks he send to all of us. uuffff we were hungry. that was so nice of him.
****Estos son algunos de los seniors que tenemos en Parlier. Good Job muchachos!!!
This week I went to see my students at Reedley. To the meeting only assissted como la mitad because the other ones were taking their exit exam. However we have a great time talking about their goals. During our next meeting we will talk about the steps they have to follow to reach their goals.

Students Blogging

Hello Mentors,
I just wanted to pass along a great idea that was given to me from one of our colleagues.
In his own words, "Although students may not have access to the blog at their school, due to the fact that in their school they have a social network system, there are ways to overcome this obstacle." As a solution to this, mentors may utilize the following steps:

Step 1:
Have the students write a reflection on what they did during your visit to their school. Students may do this in a word document.

Step 2:
Have the students email their reflections to the mentor.

Step 3:
Once receiving the reflection, blog this information for the students.

Furthermore, from an academic perspective, this will encourage the students to write more and therefore work on their writing skills consequently improving them.

It sounds like the West Hills Lemoore trip has been a huge success!!! Great job, keep us updated. The blogs have been a joy to read.
Hi everyone it was an exiting fieldtrip. I learn so much things. It is all about those Fresno High Warriors."Go Warriors". Class of 2011. I learn about things that i did not know. De parte de la mejor escuela Fresno High... Fue una experiencia inolvidable... Saludos a mis amigas...Alma, Tere y Jessica.

WOW!!! You all mentors continue to surpass our expectations. Every student you touch is a life you are changing... Eddie and I had the pleasure of observing and spending the day with Martina and Jose in the West side. We also met with Mrs Eli, Mr. Garcia and Mr. Campbell. The mentors did a great job of advertising the program. It was so amazing! They got nothing but support. As it turns out, they will be able to see students during their sixth period. Our program compliments their intervention services like a glove. It continues to be a great fit for Coalinga High. Mr. Cobarrubias from Golden Plains was expecting us. The mentors will visit Tranquility High where we expect they will continue to cultivate success.

"You are planting seeds! You may not see the flowers, but the winds will bring you thier sweet scent of success... and you will smile..."

Alfredo, Eddie and Janelle

What a Day.

Hello mentors,
Today I had a great day. I had the opportunity to continue working with the Coalinga High School students in creating e-mail and CSU mentor accounts. The students were very excited to browse through the CSU mentor web page as they were able to see what the many universities have to offer.
We then later had the opportunity to meet with the principal of Coalinga High School, Mr. Campbell, and talk to him about our program. Mr. Campbell was very excited to hear about what he had to offer for his school and added some of his ideas.
Finally, we met with the Principal of Cantua Elementary School and migrant representative of Tranquility Mr. Cobarruvias. Just as Mr. Campbell, Mr. Cobarruvias was happy to have us at Tranquility could not wait for Martina and I to start the program.

Hello all,

A very quick update today. Today, Yesenia and I went to visit Kings Canyon Middle
School during lunch. It was a success with the students as we keep getting new students
in. Surprisingly, we all had boys except for one girl. I guess Yesenia and I are good at
attracting boys eh? LOL just kidding. We will love to have some girls too but it is just the guys
that keeps returning to our program and we have five guys who wanted to go to the camp.
Anyways, during our meeting with the students, we briefly went over the program. We
also did quick team building activities. We also had some refreshments and treats for the students
as well. Mr. Rocha have been a great helper in advertising/promoting our program to many
migrant students at Kings Canyon. We are looking forward to next week meeting with our
students again. =)
Jose and I had a great day out in Coalinga and finally in GOLDEN PLAINS! First of all, of meeting was great! We were extremely busy with the students that attended today. We had some students working on their CSUMentor accounts, other students were creating e-mails, and we even had the number one ranked sophomore working on his UC account! It was great! Unfortunately, we did not have enough time to have one of our students share out his experience after attending West Hills through the College Awareness Program, but hopefully we will get to that this Friday. After the meeting, we had the privilege to meet and have a meeting with Coalinga's principle. It was great to hear that he would support us mentors with anything that was possible. After out visit to Coalinga we then went out to Golden plains for a meeting. This next Wednesday the 10th will be our first visit to Tranquility High, where we will be able to meet the students, migrant staff, and also the principle, I can't wait! As you can see we had a very exciting and productive day.

Tranquility High, here we come!!!!!

Caruthers/Riverdale

Hi everyone, Ricardo here, just wanted to give you an update on all the stuff that has been going on at our high schools this semester.
First and foremost, we're excited to say that our attendance has stayed steady despite the break and that we are still gaining new faces on most meetings! Thanks to the students for spreading the word about our program.

So, we have three very big goals for this semester (on top of what was already planned since last year):
First, we hope to bring a college admissions counselor from Fresno Pacific University visit the students. Even though most of them are not seniors this year, they can all benefit from asking the right questions to the counselor. We are therefore working on what are questions we could ask so that everyone may be better informed about college admissions in General.
Secondly, we hope to have students from both high schools attend a day long trip to Fresno Pacific itself. We have many exciting activities planned for that trip and we are now working on making that happen!
Finally, we are working on a major field trip for the students by the end of the semester. What's the educational goal you ask? They will have to complete a certain amount of community service hours and help/plan/organize ways in which we can fundraise the trip! Where to? That's a surprise, but we will definitely keep you posted.

Anyhow, I'm glad to see everyone has been doing so great this semester, we will also post pictures pretty soon.

Parlier's Visit

ufffff lastly, on Friday Adrian and I went to visit one of our students at Parlier. We talked to him and his mother. They were both excited when they realized that he has the posibility to go to college next semester. ahhhh his mother was so thankful that she invited us to dinner one day at her house.

Interest Assessment

On wednesday my students at Reedley worked on a Interest Assessment. I decided to do it because I noticed that some of my students were confused about their professional path, I was amazed by the results. At the end of the exercise, the students knew what they want to become in the future.

Hello

Hello everyone. I have been added to the blog again! Well it was a great training that we went through on Saturday. I really learned a lot. Tomorrow I will be going to West Fresno and hopefully Washinton Union. Well its great to be on here again. Thank You Alfredo. Keep up the good work everyone.

~GO MENTORS!!

Reedley at Tacos Tijuana

eeeyyy you guys hope everybody is doing ok. I want to share with all of you some pictures that we took at Tacos Tijuana. I also want to mention that we have a really fun afternoon. Adrian and I talked about our expectations for them. it was great.
