Hello, my name is Ivan Huerta and I am attending Coalinga High School. My interest major is Game Design. I chose this major because I envision myself working in the Nintendo Corp. My grade point average is a 4.0 GPA. My intensions are to attend UC Santa Cruz or UC Merced. I want to be in the best clubs to go to college and  be the best I can be.

Hello everyone,
Yesturday Pahnia and I went to kings canyon middle school and played the mafia game during lunch. All the students really liked the game and we will play again Friday since they requested it. The point of the game is see how there are times in life were we have to make decisions or others make decisions and were affected by them and have no control. The game is played with cards and it was my first time playing as well and I really enjoyed it. We also had our afterschool meeting and the session was about GPA calculation, clubs and what resources are available in highschool that they need to be aware of. We also discussed better study habits and they developed educational goals to improve their GPA's. We have scheduled our migrant party to say our goodbyes for April 7, 2010 afterschool.
Have a great spring break and I will report about Friday soon enough.

Hello Mentors,
I wanted to tell you guys about our day at Tranquillity. Today we went in state of mind of doing team building activities with the students. At first we noticed that the students were very shy to participate because of the other students who may have been looking at them. But after getting started there was no way to stop them in their activities. Take a look for yourself. Below you will find pictures of the activities.

Hello all! I hope all is well. An update on what is happening... We had d fortune to visit Reedley HS and Firebaugh HS. In Reedley, the students began d proces for the development of their historic Migrant Club. They had a great turnout... about 30+ students. The students elected some of their govering boards. What was impressive was that all of the students had a presentation. Not just a presentation, a power point presentation. They intrduced themselves and what they would provide to their consituents... in true political like fashion. They are amazing! We also got an opportunity to interview some of them and ask them about the impact of the mentoring program on their personal and academic lives and they all thanked Janeth for her assistance. It was so sweet... Oh you can see it on the front page of the MCMP website. Eddie and I are hoping to do the same with the other schools.
We also went to the teacher student luncheon in Firebaugh HS. They had 20+ students and their guests of honor. They had school personnel, teachers, the vice princial and the principal. All of the students got to do a mini presentation on the colleges of their preference and career options... The students did a wonderful job. Such eloquent speakers. They and the mentors (Maria and Adi) were very impressive and we were awed...
What a way to build academic and political capital for them and thier peers...

Lastly, we (Maria Aguilar from Parlier HS) got the previledge of attending the Migrant Parent State Conference. It was amazing... over 1300 parents throughout the state attended. We had the pleasure of presenting twice. We presented on the Mentoring Program and the College Awareness Program. It was great... The parents were asking if the mentors could go to San Diego or Monterrey to mentor their children. Any taker???? lol. They were so impressed with your work and your achievements. We took them on a journy of the website and some of the videos. The message we wanted to drive across was that they too are mentors to their children. We discussed the ways they could duplicate similar activities with their children. We also learned quite a bit. The keynote speaker was amazing. His name is Albeiro Vargas. Here is a link to his work. He is an Angel from Colombia... Follow this link to see why: http://www.fundacionalbeirovargas.org/index.html
Sharing is caring... One thing that stood out is that in order to get people to change, we have to b crazy and do crazy things. I think that some of the things you do with your students is crazy...and genius!!! Keep doing crazy things... We will keep supporting you... Si se Puede...Yes we Can! and you are true examples of it!!! We are so proud of all you! You are chaning students life journeys...and chaning our society bit by bit... Thank you!

Hello Mentors,
Martina and I wanted to inform everyone bout a phone call that we just recently had with one of our parents in Coalinga. This parent was very excited to hear that her son is interested on playing football for a university here in California rather than joining the military right after high school. The student was happy to hear that with a little determination he can attend college.

We also took this opportunity to invite the parent to attend our meetings. She was excited to hear about this and said that she will be making time to come and visit.

Hello Mentors,
Just updating on what has happened to us so far here at Coalinga. To our surprise we found out that Martina had won a backpack with materials from the Parent Conference we had attended this past saturday. Martina has decided to give it out as a prize to our students. Over and out.

Hello mentors. It was great to hear about your great work. Eddie and I will work on d transcript doc. We will let u know when it is ready. As u know we r coming to d end of d year. Let's finish strong. Time to push our birdies into flight...

West Fresno

Today Ceasar and I went to visit West Fresno. We know we not suppose to bring them pizza but we already promise them that we were going to bring them pizza and we do not want the students to think that we cannot do what we promise. Even though we brought them pizza, we also brought them some fruits to start getting them into the habit of eating fruits to balance things out. Today at West Fresno we went over the transcripts and the a-g requirements again to remind the students. We also talk about college and also let the students talk about what they think the importance of college is. The students shocked us because they were coming up with such great answers and they were so involved in the conversation. Other than that we also talked about out of country studying to the students and explain that here is not the only place that a person can get an education.
Last but not least I want to thank Ceasar for being such a great partner.
Hope everyone is doing great at their districts and hope to see everyone at the meeting today.

Coalinga/Tranquillity

Hello Mentors,
Just wanted to update everyone on what is happening at Coalinga and Tranquillity. At Coalinga we have been working on leadership skills with the students. They where very happy when they did the handcuffs activity. We also took video of it so I will make sure to forward that to Alfredo. As far as Tranquillity we have been working on being able to read and undestand your own transcript. The students there were excited because now they know what courses they should be taking while in high school in order to be able to attend a 4-year university.

Last weekend we had our parent conference at Coalinga Middle School. There we had the opportunity to talk to the parents about the Mentoring Program. Parents were happy to hear about all the great things with do with their children. They were are happy to hear bout the field trips we take the sudents to including visiting various universities and attending the leadership camps.

Coalinga-Huron Parent Conference Videos

Coalinga-Huron Parent Conference Pictures

Migrant Parent Conference at Coalinga-Huron

I would like to thank Martina & Jose for their outstanding presentation on the mentoring program, college awareness program and leadership camps. There were many parents amazed of what our mentors do.

There were parents in attendance that have a son/daughter that participate in the mentoring program and reassured Martina & Jose for the job well done they are doing with their children. One parent even shared with Martina how she (mother) sees the difference in her child's positive behavior and thoughts towards academics.

Aside from working hard...you can see they always make time to have fun with students and parents. Above this post, are some pictures & videos of the conference.

Coalinga High & Tranquillity High

Good evening,
Last week was great! On Wednesday, we went to Tranquillity High and took some time to fill out the MCMP surveys. Then on Friday, we went out to Coalinga and worked on the same activity also. Most of our students were not able to attend the meeting due to the camp this weekend. I can't wait to hear their stories and to hear what they gained and learned in the camp. As for Saturday, we attended a PAC meeting in Coalinga and it was AWESOME! We received alot of great feedback from the parents and also alot of new parents that are really interested in having their children involved in our program. The plan for this week will be to invite all of the students that the parents requested to our meeting this Friday. I was also excited to know that several of the parents are planning to attend our meetings. We hope to see them!
Have a great week :)

Firebaugh High School

Today's visit at Firebaugh High School went wonderful. Some students were not able to attend because they were participating in the leadership camp this weekend, which is AWESOME! Have fun this weekend everyone!
As for the rest of us, we discussed the importance of community service. The students shared with me their past experience with community service and we decided that we would participate in our community as a group.
The students were very enthusiastic and they brainstormed different projects we can do. Some of their ideas were:
*Reading and spending time with kinder students
*Food Drives
*Volunteering at Valley Children's Hospital
*Reaching out to At-Risk Youth
*Book Drive

All these were great ideas, and we're looking forward to participate in them!

Updates,

Today went pretty well meeting with the VP of Roosevelt and Ms. Buchanan again.
Thanks to Sally Jimenez, the vice principal, we are set and ready to continue our
program and our visits at Roosevelt. She was able to listen to our needs and found us
a room right away so we will be visiting Roosevelt again on Monday during lunch
and Thursday after school. Afterward Yesenia and I made some summons to our
student so that they will know our meeting on Monday. Other than that, I hope
everyone else is doing a great job. =)
Hello everyone, I hope you are all having a great time at your schools. Have a wondeful weekend!

Kings Canyon Middle School

Hello everyone hope your all doing great. I just wanted to share with you all, Panhia and I went to Roosevelt on Monday and made an appointment with one of the vice principles for an effort to get a room designated for the migrant college mentoring program meetings. Once we get the room we plan on sending summits to all migrant students to invite them to join us and participate in the activities we have prepared for them as well as workshops to enhence their knowledge of higher education. We will be meeting with the vice principle this evening and im really excited and hopeful she will be able to solve a few issues we have come across. I will post how that went later this evening!
Yesturday we visited Kings Canyon Middle School and had them fill out the questioner during our lunch meeting. We also meet with them after school and held a workshop on community needs as the students that attended camp really found it beneficial. The issues discusses consisted on the control and reduction of drugs, trash, and chewing gum on campus. The students were full of ideas and had great sets in resolving the issues. We are also planning a lunch in for April 30 as its the last day of work and i think its motivated them to participate in all our meetings.
Having a great week everyone...

Migrant Club and Kids Day

Hi, my name is Laura Castro and I am a member of Parlier High School Migrant Club. On Tuesday March 9, 2010 we sold newspapers for Kid’s Day, to get donation for The Valley Children’s Hospital. It was a great experience, too be doing something that I know will be helpful for a lot of needed kids. All my friends were in the best disposition to help since we got to the place where we were selling many newspapers. We were asking different people for donations, we would dance, sing or do whatever so they would buy at least one. These kinds of activities are very fun and self rewarding.

Kid's Day

Hi everyone my name is Tania Salas

The Migrant Club students from Parlier high school helped to fundraise money to donate to the children’s hospital, it was an exciting day we not only had fun but also had a great experience. We would stop cars and ask them to buy the newspaper for one dollar. Many cars would stop and buy a newspaper and many would donate money. These money donations includes many fives, tens and sometimes twenty dollar bills. It was very cold day but it was worth it because it was for the kids and we raised more than 1000 dollar.

KIDS DAY

Hello, my name is Aidee Duran and I was at the Kids Day on March 9. I was there all day since 6:00am to 3:00pm. The event was awesome and cool and I am very proud of doing this because I was helping to save childrens to lifes. What I did is yelling at the people to help buy a newspaper and help the children.

Parlier High & Kids Day

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to give some of the students at Parlier High School the opportunity to talk about their participation in Kids Day. Lol I think your presentation on community service got to them JOSE.

Caruthers High Job Application Workshop

Hello All,

Yesterday we had our first series of workshops on filling out a job application. Although we didn't have the turnout we expected, we accomplished a lot during our meeting. We began filling out a job application. Many of our mentees had no idea on how to fill out the application, and many also had questions on certain questions. Today we have our study group hour with them, and we plan to continue with the job application process. I hope we get our same students from yesterday and new ones!!!

UPDATES!!!

Hello fellow mentors. I apologize for not being so good about blogging. I know that if I don't blog, theng you don't know what I have been up to. So here it is:
After our high school camp, I got many few fresh ideas for our meetings with Caruthers and Riverdale. This past two weeks I have been meeting with our Caruthers group and we began talking about job interviewing skills and resume layout. Many of our students want a job, but they do not know how to dress professional to go apply for a job or ask for a job application. Therefore, the mentees and we decided to do a workshop on how to fill out a job application, how to do a resume and how to perform in a job interview. So today when we meet we will begin our series of workshop. I am really excited!!!

Monday, March 8, 2010

Hello all,

Today did not go so well as Yesenia and I was throw all over the place at
Roosevelt. LOL. Since, we do not have a place yet, we cannot get a hold
of the students Jose & I had last semester. Yesenia and I thought that we
can use Ms. Buchanan's room today to meet with any students who comes
in but unfortunately Ms. Buchanan had a meeting so she sent us to the
library. There, we asked the librarian if we can use the library as a daily place
for our meetings but another unfornately, she said we really cannot because
they have some other programs going on too. We then was sent to the office
where we had to wait and finally made an appointment to meet with one of
the VP this Thursday afternoon. Lets hope the VP can find us a room and
I'm hoping we will get a room so that Yesenia and I can continue to work
with the students we had last semester (as this semester is coming to an end already).
Well, as with Kings Canyon, things are going great. Yesenia and I have made our future
visit agendas already as to what to do with the kids. To plan ahead with give us more
time to see how it will progress. I'm hoping the rest of you did too. We have good news and bad news, bad the only thing we are
struggling with is that our number of kids decreased within the past month. They
just stop showing up now even though we always give them treats. LOL. So we
are working on bringing them back. Good, we finally have some girl students who keep
returning. To me, that is progress we made. =) Other than that, I'm hoping we will finish
this semester with a great ending. =) & Alfredo, I'll call you tomorrow for an update
although I pretty much update on the blog already. Twice would be better. =)

Tranquility and Colinga

Hello,
This week Jose and I were at Tranquility on Wednesday and today we were at Coalinga. We are so excited to see that our students are consistent in attending our meetings during lunch; we had a group of about 35 students. Our meeting's focus was on Scholarships and for the underclassmen, it was to create a CSU Mentor account. We asked them to bring in their transcripts to be analysed for next meeting. As for Coalinga High, today we did an activity were they students learned the importance of patience, working together, communication, and the importance of having good listening skills. The students loved it! We also provided them with help in completing their personal statements.
Well, have a great weekend!

Goal Setting and Lunch Planning

  • Monday's visit to Mendota High School went very well. The girls enjoyed pizza with their peers while they thought about their long term goals. Since Mendota wasn't able to attend the high school camp, they did a goal setting workshop of their own. We have high hopes for these girls and believe they can do anything they set their minds to.
  • As far as Firebaugh goes, the students are planning a student-teacher luncheon. The lunch is scheduled for March 19Th. The student's are working on getting everything organized. Today's visit will consist of making invitations for the staff.
  • We look forward for the students to eat lunch with their teachers and introduce themselves to the entire staff.

Wednesday Visit: Kings Canyon Middle School

Hello everyone hope your all having a great week and ready for the weekend. I just wanted to share that Panhia and I went to Kings Canyon Middle School yesterday and it was great. It was a staff development day so we were only able to meet with them during their lunch and not after school. We asked the students that attended the camp to share what they learned to the rest of the group and all five students really enjoyed the community workshop and in response we are going to introduce it the group as a whole and have them come up with an issue and address it. They were all really excited but sad because it wasn't long enough. Many of them made great friends to which they are in contact with. All over all I'm pleased with the satisfaction and results of the leadership camp. We usually meet Friday's but Panhia and i have appointments that couldn't be rescheduled therefore we wont be seeing them until next Wednesday. We informed the students and I'm really looking forward to the community activity! Have a great weekend!!!

Student Meetings and Middle School CAMP

Hello everyone hope you all had enough rest after the middle school camp this weekend. I just wanted to inform you of how our meeting went last Friday. I didn't have all my students present and i think they were confused about whether the meeting was only for the students going to camp. I had all my five camp students and about six other students and we just socialised and talked about they're favorite TV shows and what the purpose behind those shows is. This lunch meeting was with the Kings Canyon Middle school and the five students attending the camp were really excited and i will be seeing them tomorrow. I had a challenge Friday because i was there by myself and wasn't told until that morning that my partner wasn't going to make it. Over all it was great!!!
Yesterday i meet with Mrs. Bucanan at Roosevelt High school and once again i was their by myself as my partner informed me that morning she wasn't going to make it. Its important that as the year comes to an end we recognize our commitment and stay on it. I was lost at Roosevelt but once i found my place we discussed with Mrs. Bucanan our meeting days and were working on getting a location. I also had the opportunity to help two of the migrant students with their correction to their fafsa application. I'm really looking forward to working with the Roosevelt High School Students.
As for the camp last weekend, it was amazing!!!!! The students were great and really enjoyed the activities and the opportunity to meet new people. I know the girls in my cabin became friends instantly and wished it was a longer camp. They plan on attending other camps to continue to expand their knowledge on the variety of resources but also to meet new people and become more social. Thank you students for being great and continue to take advantage of all the resource opportunities that are available for you!!!!!!!
