Washington

Hey u guys,

I forgot to mention that Polo is working on his Masters degree in Political Science. I wish you guys the best holidays ever and drive safely.

Washington Union

Hey everyone,

I contacted a friend Polo last week. He is working on his masters in Fresno State. Polo is going to be our guest speaker in Washington Union this Wednesday. He is a nice person and I am confident that the students will be able to connect with him. :)

West Fresno

Last Wednesday and Thursday Hmong and I visited West Fresno. The students sign-up to bring a dish for next Wednesday; we will be enjoying a potluck to celebrate before going in vacations. Mr. Adame, School Principal, is incredibly supportive on what the students want to do. He gave us a room for the potluck and gave permission to bring guest speakers.

Today newsletter

FROM ROOSEVELT:

Hello all, I hope everyone had a great time today at the meeting (eatting Eddie's cake) LOL.
Just want to share with you guys that my visit at Roosevelt today was successful. The students were very good in turning their transcript and release forms on time. I also had some new students
take the pre-test and students evaluation forms. I also help one of my student to send her scores,
I showed her how because she did not know how. Besides that, I was working on my summons
of students for tomorrow after school (hoping to see the majority of them). Hope everyone have
a good evening. =)

School Visit

Hello Everyone,
I was in Coalinga High yesterday and meet with seven migrant students as we continue to inform all current migrant students of our program. During lunch i had a lot of our regular students come in and ask for additional information regarding trade schools, scholarships, and more information regarding the Fresno state portal. Martina and I will be giving a presentation Friday during lunch, about the UC and CSU system and the universities. We are currently pulling migrant students out of their classes and informing them of the college migrant program and the fact that we are their for them and so far its been great, i wont be able to post any further pictures as we are still collecting release forms and some of the students in are pictures have not turned them in. I will report on our Friday meeting once it occurs...
Good luck with finals everyone and see you all Thursday at 9am during our staff meeting...

Roosevelt High School:

Update update today. Today, I also gave out some more release forms to some students. I received some release forms and transcript from other students also. They did a good job on turning in their forms on time. I am hoping to receive the rest sometime tomorrow or by next week before they are due. As of right now, I am still at Roosevelt currently helping out some students on their essays for English. Well, back to work I go. Hope everyone is doing well and are as busy as me or busier. LOL. =)

Roosevelt

Yesterday Pa Nhia and I took the opportunity to update our lists and to create a list of the students that have not turned in their transcripts. I got to say that we are expecting a big turnout friday since we are sending out lots of summons. Wish us good luck!

Hi everyone,
I'm glad that everyone is back to work after a relaxing and needed break. The pictures that are posted above are from our last meeting at Caruthers. This group of students has turned in their release forms and are now getting their transcripts. We had a very good idea as to how to make sure they bring their paperwork--we will be bringing tacos to the meeting Tuesday and if the students want to attend they must submit their transcripts as a ticket. Moroever, we will be contacting them the night before, the goal is to get them motivated so we hope this works.
Finally, Yadira and I are planning a series of trips to Fresno Pacific University. Mentors, if you are interested in taking your students there, please contact us and we'll make it happen!
Hope to hear from all of you.
Ricardo Guevara

West Fresno

Hi Everyone,
Hmong and I visited West Fresno yesterday. We asked the students to form groups of four and share what they did in Thanksgiving week. After five minutes of conversation, we played “Green light, red light.” The objective of both activities was to create cohesion and apparently it worked because they [students] begin to organize a potluck all by themselves. I selected a student to be in charge of the potluck and explained to everyone that their contribution could be small. I gave them examples such as a small bag of chips or a bag of candies. :) We will be meeting in the computer lab next week to look information on campuses, and to make a list on the potluck.

Migrant Office
A. Ponce, J. Martin & E. Rodriguez

Today visit & yesterday

Hello all,

Hope all is well. Well, I just want to update you guys what I've done so far at Roosevelt
yesterday and today. Yesterday, I was just helping the majority of seniors with their
community service paperwork. I also pass out some release forms and ask some of the
students to get their transcripts for me also. Today, Jose and I was just making summons
for the students we need to see, we also look up some students that we need their
transcripts and release forms. That's about it for today's update and remember, time cards are due tomorrow. Like Alfredo joked, no time card no holiday shopping. LOL.

ROOSEVELT

Today has been one of my slowest days here at school. Only a few students came in for help with their CAMP application. This allowed me time to input some of the information into the mentor web page and to make copies of the papers that we were using up to this point. Oh, and one more thing, Eddie and Alfredo stopped by today and gave me good advice and how to do some things with the students. Thanks guys.

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

Hi mentors,

Today in the office, I made home phone calls to some of the Coalinga High Mentees to make sure they were set with their CSU and UC applications and to see if they have any other questions with application. I was exited to hear that most of the students that I spoke to already had submitted their applications and were already set. I am very proud with this group of students because several of them have opened up their options to where they now plan to attend. I can't wait to hear from them when they get accepted to the Universities that they applied for.

Let enjoy our break! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving

A WELL DESERVED BREAK...ENJOY

Dar Gracias

Hi guys, Ricardo here...

Just wanted to post an update on our students over at Riverdale High and Caruthers high.
We have now had several meetings with our students and have quickly noticed that we have a special group of students in our hands. A lot of our students at Riverdale high have already applied to a four year institution and are now in the search of scholarships with which to pay their education. Also, today, we found out that 95% of students at Caruthers high have applied to at least a City College. Knowing this information, Yadira and I now set out to the task of educating these students on the best way to approach scholarship applications. Futhermore, we are asking students what they're specifics gifts are so that we help find them scholarships related to their abilities (i.e. athletic, art, music, etc). Soon we will be going out to their games, concerts, expositions, and taking video that they may use for applications and for personal enjoyment.

Well, it is that time of the year again in which we all get time to relax and enjoy getting in line at ungodly hours of the morning to buy the latest HD TV... or spend time with the family, same deal. Either way, I hope that everyone has a safe break and come back recharged to finish the semester strong.

Abrazos,

HOW CUTEEEE, COMO DIRIAN LAS MUJERS. LOL

ROOSEVELT H.S.

We had a Thanksgiving potluck last Friday and it was a success. For a bit it looked as if we were not going to have it but in the end it all worked out wonderful. Our students enjoyed the food and took advantage of that time to ask us any remaining that they had regarding their CSU applications. Hopefully we can have another potluck for Christmas break and invite the mentors to join us.
Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I just wanted to update you on how in went this past Friday in Coalinga. I was working with them on finishing up their college applications and on scholarships. It was exited to see all the questions that they had for me. I was also excited to see that the students that attended the Migrant Youth Day on Tuesday came to attend the meeting on Friday; they had a lot of great suggestions. This week Yesenia and I will be calling and emailing our students to remind them about the incoming dead line for the college applications and to see if they have any other concerns or questions. We are looking forward for Tuesday the 1st because Yesenia and I will have a luncheon for all of our migrant students.

Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!

our visits for today.

HOLA,

Today Adrian and I visited a student from PHS, our new student is a junior his grades are not really good and even though he wants to go to college he was dissappointed because he thought that going to college without a social was imposible. We explained to him about the AB540 status. At the end of our meeting our student was all motivated and he knew that some steps to achieve his goal are to get better grades, follow the A-G requirements, follow his high school's graduation requirements and to start working on getting scholarships. HE WAS REALLY POSITIVE ABOUT HIS POTENTTIAL TO ACHIEVE HIS GOAL.

After that we went to RHS to see another of our students, she is a senior and she is in the right path to graduation so we just provided her a list of different scholarship she can apply to.

Reedley High School's Club

HOLA A TODOS !!!

wow first of all thanks Mrs Doris for your opinion.
I want to share with all of you the things that are happening at RH. Last wednesday Adrian and I went to RH to see our students. The students wanted to do fund raising, The students desicion about fund raising was so serious that Jacobo and Hector took the leadership role and at the end of our meeting all students agreed on selling chocolates. The problem was that we couldn't sell or do field trips unless we have a club. Thus Today I meet with Mrs. Doris who is the research teacher at Kings CanyonUnified District. During our meeting we Decided that a club at RH es necesario and so we will start to work in the requirements for the club when we get back from thanks giving vacation. yuuuupyyyyy!!! !!!!

I think that Adrian and I are going to form a really good team... ohh and de nada Adrian I am glad I can help you.

finally I want to say thanks to German por aver presentado at the PAC meeting last thursday y por ofrecerce a ayudarnos. Thanks G-Man

Welcome Migrant Mentors- Mrs. Doris Rosales

Hello Everyone
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for welcoming me, and special thanks to Janeth for updating me on everything thats going on in Reedly and Parlier High School. This has just been my first week as a mentor and I already LOVE it. Over the last three days, I have recieved more than eight phone calls from students asking me to help them go to college, how to apply for scholarships, and many other questions. I really look foward to helping all of these students. Wow and yesterday at Reedly High School me and Janeth were really amazed because more than 25 students showed up. I was really impressed with freshman Hector because he really took charge of the meeting. That little guy is developing great leadership skills and he really modivates everyone else to participate.

CSU Fresno Visit

Hello everyone, today we had migrant students from different school visit Fresno State. I want to thank all the mentors who attended the event i really had a great time with all of you. I enjoyed bonding with all of you. I felt that i knew you all a lot better and we should try to get together with all the mentors once a month, just to socialize and get to know one another better. Martina and I also met with a few of our mentees from coalinga high school and we recieved great feed back from them. We asked what they learned and it ranged from A-G requirments to learning about the different programs available to them. We collected great ideas as far as what they'd like to see happen in Coalinga and were really looking forward in assisting them bring all their ideas into place. I'll share more once I met with them Thursday...

Hello folks. This message is from Adrian your newest team member. It is a picture of him, the Liason from Reedley and Janeth... By the way I didnt wear jeans today lol, o yeah thanks for giving me this great opportunity, I really appreciate it.

HS VISITS

First of all I want to say welcome to Adrian my new companero...
I want to share with all of you some of the requirements we have for the students to be able to go to the field trips.
1- 20 hours of comunity service
2- been an active member of the club wich means participating in the different fund raising activities
3- Meeting Attendance

yeaahhhh!!! I am really glad that we have the Migrant Club. my most ambicious goal for this club is that each member of the club not only been motivated by us but that they become motivators as well; yes I want every single member to BECOME A MENTOR. My plan is to teach my students the same skills that I have learned in this program, so I'll teach them to:
- Have a higher self-esteem which will make them be more confident assertive and courageous to reach their dreams.
-Identify their areas of improvement and strenghts however that they focus on their strenghts to achieve their goal and to become succesfull members of society
-Make them aware of the capacity they have to motivate others therefore to impact others lives.
-A-G requirements.
-CSU Mentor Account.
-How to apply for scholarships.
-How to apply for college
-------I am pretty sure I am missing some but this are just some points that I have in my mind at this moment jajajaja.

ALSO I AM OPEN TO ANY IDEAS OF ANY OF YOU SO PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK AND YOUR IDEAS AS WELL.... I'LL BE WAITING FOR THEM OK.

Well today Adrian and I went to Parlier HS. We have our second meeting with the Migrant Club. Today we gave the riffle tickets to the students and our field trip to Dysneyland is going to be on March 27 yeahhh uhuhu. We also visited the migrant personal at Reedley HS. uffff it was a long day for Adrian and I pero valio la pena.

PARENT MEETING

HELLO EVERYBODY,

Last Thursday tuvimos the parent meeting at Reedley. Melisa, German and I presented about our program, the parents showed alot of interest in our program. we also shared some of the obstacles that we go through in our journey to a higher education.

Today one of Reedley's migrant liaisons told me that her husband told her that due to our presentation he finally understood what the main point of her job was. amazing ahhh... .... she also told me that her husband is going back to college after many years of just been working and that he felt really motivated by our stories. According to this migrant liaison her husband's words were "if this guys can do it even though they have all those absacles I can do it too, I can too reach my goals".

WOW WOW today I confirmed again that we as mentors really have the power to impact others AWESOME AHHH. Thus lets all use our moivational talent to help other have a better life.

Enthusiasm !!!

Hey you Guys,

I visited West Fresno today and the students responded with great enthusiasm. This time I brought them cakes and promised them pizza for next Wednesday if they bring their release forms. Many students have shown to our meeting, but this time I believe that the ones that attended today will be my core group. Everybody in the meetin introduce themselve and mentioned what they want to be when they grow-up. The vast majority of my students are girls, but I have started to consider different ways on which I can attract more boys to join in. My first idea is organize a soccer match during lunch or recess and utilize this opportunity to invite boys to join the group. :)

Coalinga

Hello everyone, hope your all doing great. I was at Coalinga highschool last week on tuesday and we are meeting with all the migrante students and introducing the program to them as a group. Im really exciting because through this process we have had various students come in during lunch and ask for help in finishing their applications and starting their essays. As a reward for the students Martina and i are planning a Thanksgiving lunch in which the students will be given the opportunity to socialize and network with other migrante students that in their current circumstance dont socialize with. I will also be meeting with underclassmen tomorrow at Fresno State and i will be going out to coalinga on thursday...

Mentor Pics!!

Hello All Mentors, I know we need to update the mentor pictures on out website and the past pictures that i took didn't come out as i planned so id like to retake them and I'm willing to make individual appointments with everyone so we can get those pictures up before winter vacation. If you can all contact me and let me know what time works best for you we can arrange to meet on campus as there are a few green places i really liked. Please work with me and i would like everyone to wear a button up shirt and slacks as it does look professional and anyone who accesses the page will see our pics.
Thanks for your attention and hope to hear from all of you soon.....

Great Turnout at Riverdale!!!

Hello fellow mentors!!!

Our meeting at Riverdale High School was awesome and very informative. We had a great turnout, we even ran out of pizzas and soda...So next time we are going to prepare more food for the students. In our meeting we had a mini workshop on AB540 students as we had promised the week before. The students were given several documents which described in detail what the AB540 affidavit entailed. Also, we gave them a list of numerous scholarships to which all AB540 students can apply for. So our workshop went great, we had a number of questions and a lot of participation from our students.

During the meeting we also passed out the Release Information slips and of course asked the students to bring it back for next week.

At the end of our meeting we are approached by one of our mentees, Maricruz, who is part of the school's newspaper. She asked us to interview with her so she can put a story on the newspaper about our program and all the great things we do with them. We said yes!!! So we will be working on that next week with her. When the newspaper issue with our interviews comes out I'll make sure to bring copies to the office so you guys can check it out!! GO COWBOYS!!!

HMONG VANG (Washington Union HS & West Fresno MS)

Hello Everyone
so yesterday morning like at 4:oo a.m i woke up with a really bad cold and it just got worst in the morning. I didn't want to go to work like that because you know with the H1N1 flue going around so i called Alfredo but we didn't want to cancel the meeting... What did we do? So Melissa and I brainstormed and with the help of our mentees and parent involvement the meeting turned out great. I got in contact with one of the seniors that was a mentee last year and she took charge with the help of Mr. Cabrera they went over class schedules and turned in transcripts I would also like to thank one of the parents for taking time in day to take the lunches to the class.
I am very proud and fortunate with the group I have...

Thanks for all your hard work Firebaugh....

NYOB ZOO (Hello):

Just another quick update on what I did today at Roosevelt. Today was really pack because
I had so many students (seniors) coming in to do their applications for State and City. There was only one of me to go around and help them lol. Anyways, tomorrow Jose and I will miss out on the staffs meeting because we've already invited some students for our meeting tomorrow at Roosevelt after school. That is pretty much it, we will start talking about the program to some other migrant students instead of just focusing on the seniors as of right now. We are also looking forward to our
Thanksgiving potluck too at Roosevelt. Well, I hope everyone have a great night. I'll be heading
home now from Roosevelt High. =)

Visit to Caruthers

Hello ALL!!!

We visited our students from Caruthers yesterday, we had a great turnout! About 22 students showed up. Like I had said before the school provided lunch for them so the students were very happy. We established that our meetings will be held every friday during lunch!!! The students seemed quite interested in our program and all promised to come back for our next meeting, we will see how that turns out...For our next meeting we will begin working with the seniors on college applications because as we found out most of them have not applied for college, so the clock is ticking super fast for us...

Also, we will discuss the AB540 affidavit to our mentees. I would like to thank the Caruthers staff specially Mrs. Cabrera, Mr. Iniquez, Mrs. Gursharan for all of their support!!
