HELLO AGAIN:

Hey everyone, hope everything is going well. Today, Jose and I didn't do much. Instead, we sat down and talk with a student and we had a meeting (planning) with Mrs. Buchanan. Jose and I talked to Lucky Lee (a current migrant student), he is such a wonderful student but so self-determined. Meaning, he was hard trying to persuade about college. He wants to go to college but instead a private college. Jose and I was trying to open and give him the different choices he have besides just attending a private college and cannot get your master degree for a better financial job. Lucky told us straight out that he knows where he is going and he is going to stick with what he planned. He told us money is not important to him and that he don't really care about getting a high pay job. Jose and I tried our best and we are not going to give up on him. He have self-determination and self-strive in him, but he is just set maybe in a wrong path. We were both surprised when Mrs. Buchanan told us that he is the president of the Hmong Club. I mean, he was difficult trying to talk to, and then here we have or we know another side of him that is different. He got mad because Jose made a joke with him about going to a private school instead of a university, and then he just got up and took off during the conversation. I think this is a situation where our 24/7 psychologist--> Dr. Ponce comes in handling (LOL) just kidding. But Jose and I will try to work with him, and maybe turn or change his mind about some stuffs for the better. =) Anyways, what we've planned so far with Mrs. Buchanan for this upcoming November, is work with those students who needs to complete their CAMP and EOP applications. Then hopefully we can start recruiting our team for the year. =) We have recruiting a few along the way but we wanted to go into further details with them later on when we have the big recruitment. We also planned a Thanksgiving Potluck for our migrant students. We will be sending out invitations for a celebration. That's about all for today, and we guys enjoy your weekend + have a safe and happy halloween. =)

HELLO ALL:

Sorry, long time no post. I just want to update you guys on what Jose and I have done so far for these past few days. We are continuing on the college applications. For some students, we are helping them apply for CAMP and EOP since the deadline is approaching. The majority of our students approve for their fee, and a few do have to pay for their own applications. We came out with a way to help them sell candies and fundraise for their fee instead of paying from their own money. Today, we had a Halloween party for those who had completed (or in the process of completing) their applications as a little celebration to congrats them. Thanks for Mrs. Buchanan for such a great idea along with Jose Sanchez. The good news are, the majority of our students who summitted their applications to State are already accepted. A few are in process still, but we are glad of our students for their accomplishment. Soon, we will start with the recuirment. =)

Riverdale Visit

Hello Everyone!

On Friday we visited Riverdale High School. We met with about 20 seniors that are interested in going to college, but don't know exactly where they want to apply. We had some of them tell us they wanted to go to trade school, community college, vocational school, Fresno State and even one that wants to go to Chicago University. We are very excited to see that these seniors want to continue with their education; we will be visiting them next week. Next week we will be going over the A-G requirements among other things and getting them ready to apply for college. Also, many of the seniors we met with will be bringing other students to our meetings, therefore this is another form of recruiting for those of you that are having problems recruiting students. Keep up the good work mentors!!!

HELLO MENTORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AS YOU MAY ALL KNOW I AM NOT DOING THE MENTORING PROGRAM, ANY MORE. I JUST WANTED TO STOP BY AND SAY HELLLLLOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I HOPE YOU ARE ALL DOING GOOD WITH YOUR STUDENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP UP THE HARD WORK AND ALWAYS SMILE =)=)=) LOL!
TAKE CARE EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HELLO:

Jose and I are here again at Roosevelt. =) We are working with more students who need their application to be fill out. We are mostly working with students to get them qualify for State, meaning filling out the sample A-G requirement form to see if they can apply for State. Along with that, we are telling out students to apply for both C.A.M.P and E.O.P and see if they qualify for one or the other. After this, Jose, Mrs. Buchanan and I will be doing some more planning of what we want to achieve this semester. Update you guys soon again. =)
HI!

This week Yesenia and I went out to Coalinga. On Tuesday, students created their email and on Friday students would get informed about the A-G requirements. We are currently also trying to get more students, so far we plan to call and email students but can you guys think of any other creative ideas?
TIME CARDS ARE DUE TODAY...
Thank you.

Here I am again =)

I am currently at Roosevelt still. I was helping out a few seniors again with their applications. Today, I help Hia Chue Vang, who is almost finish with his application. I also help out Mai See Lor with her EOP and CAMP applications. I was informed a lot today by learning how to fill out these applications and how to help the students. Tomorrow afterschool, I'll be here again and helping out the students complete their applications and move on to the EOP or CAMP applications. Hopefully, we'll get this soon over with and start on recruiting our team for this 09-10. =)

PAC Meeting at Riverdale

Hello Guys!!

We visited the parents from Riverdale High School during their October PAC meeting. Mrs. Hernandez, the migrant liasion, along with Mrs. Locke, one of the Vice Principals, were kind enough to introduce Ricardo and I so that we could tell the parents a little bit about the MCMP. The parents were great!!! They really seemed interested in our program, so interested that we had a mom sign up her kids to our program, yay!!!!!! So I guess this can be a form of recruiting, going to the PAC meetings on a monthly basis and motivating the parents to sign up their children. We look forward to attending the upcoming PAC meetings at Riverdale High School!!!!!!

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Hello All;

I'm here at Roosevelt High School right now. Sadly, Jose could not make it today
because he had class but I totally understand him. Well, today was a busy day. There are
a lot of students (seniors) here today after school. I met a few new faces and got to chat
with them. I was just helping out the seniors with their college applications and over view for
those that are near completion. Mrs. Buchanan had to leave early for her appointment, but I was with her assistant Ivonne and three student assistance. They are very nice and talkative people to keep me company. =) After the seniors left, I was talking to Kelly, a student helper. I was telling her about the program individually. She seems to be very excited for the program and to be a
part of it. I show her the migrant website and the pictures of the former migrant students
who went to camp. She was surprised with the number of students we had and how
interesting the camping seems. Well, here's just a quick update. Hope everyone is doing well and be prepare for this Thursday meeting at Migrant Office.

Hello mentors!

I just wanted to keep you up to date with Coalinga. So far the weather hasn't been on our side :-(. On Tuesday we tried the booth idea but it was raining so unfortunately that did not go too well but we just went up to students. But on Friday, we had a meeting after school but only two students went to our meeting, but those two students really pumped me up and gave me motivation because they were full of questions and are really seeking our help. Yesenia will be heading out there on Tuesday and I will be heading out there on Friday, so wish us luck! We decided to try lunch time, maybe we will have more than two students this week..lol.

Have a great week!

UPDATE UPDATE!!

Hello All,

Just a very quick update here. Jose and I are at the Migrant Office working on some documents and of course our school schedule. Last Friday we went to visit Roosevelt. We did not work with any students at all but the whole time that we were there, we planned some events for the upcoming months. What we planned was to work with the seniors as of right now due to the deadline of their college applications. Then we will further on work with the Migrant students as a whole. In conclusion to once we accomplish helping our seniors, Mrs. Buchanan thought of an idea to celebrate for their completion. This is planned to be in Novemeber, right before Thanksgiving vacation. And we finally have a room now. We will be in the Migrant office at Roosevelt most of the time. Whenever we have a large group of students, we will be in Mr. Gomez's (History Teacher) room. Mrs. Buchanan also taught us how to summon our own students when we need them. This could be just a reminder for them or to pull them out (trying to avoid during learningg class time) when we are at Roosevelt. Lastly, Jose and I was thinking about having a potluck before winter vacation with a gift exchanges for the students (depending on the number of students). Well, hope everyone else is doing well. =)

Will be hearing from you...

Visit to Riverdale High School

Hello Guys!

Ricardo and I visited Riverdale High School this past Tuesday and we came back with great suggestions. We will begin working with seniors that have no idea what they want to do after high school; who need that extra motivation. And of course that is why I am here for! The Migrant Liasion was really nice and she gave us a lot of suggestions of how to work with the kids!

Guys all the blogs you post are really helping me out, thanks!

It's about time Alfredo....

I am finally logged in!!!

Hello Team

Good Morning Team,

I just wanted to say "HI"! How is everything going so far with you mentees?

Janeth and I are planning to start setting up appoitments with the students' parents. We want to meet them to talk about our MCMP.

By the way, i want to say "Good Job" to Lali and Melissa for the idea of recruting students. Setting up a table is a great idea. Good job again!

I tried to do it at RHS but i failed.... lol it is cuz i used the poster from Parlier and they wanted to kill me... they were all mad! lol Good i was just standing with the poster like the people on the corners promoting something. lol So what i did is that i took Parlier away! Those guys ruined my poster! lol Now I am gonna ask them to make one for Reedley. lol

We recruited about 12 students, I think it is a good number to start with.

See you guys,

G.man!

HELLO HELLO ALL:

Sorry about not posting this last Friday but it been a busy week so far. Anyways, I just want to
update you all about Jose and my visit last Friday. It was a while that we spent at Roosevelt. Jose and I was in the library helping out a few seniors with their applications. I would like to personally thank Mrs. Buchanan for sending emails to the seniors about our day at the library. I was glad that even though she was not there, she was able to help us email the students and let them know that we were there. She also "cc" us the email and so we got a glance of what she sent to the students. It was a great pleasure to help out these seniors because they had a lot of questions coming at us. LOL. Gloria and Mainou were great students with good grades and a high potential for college. I can see the potential and successful-ness in them girls (not saying the other seniors don't). At the same time, I was learning new things too. I remember filling out my application with no help at all and a few errors but still I made it to college. Since the university is more strict on their applicants, these applications should be fill out correctly. Jose and I helped these students and most of them were finish with theirs. We did not let them submit it yet because we wanted Mrs. Buchanan to double check it first to make sure the application was filled out completely and correctly. We found the www.ucop.edu/doorways very helpful with these applications of the a-g requirements. Concluding with that, we will again visit Roosevelt sometime tomorrow or Friday after school and plan out things for a better and clearer future. =)

hello mentors

I just want to update you guys that on Wednesday during lunch, Jose and I were able to help out a few seniors at Roosevelt by helping them fill out their applications. Mrs Buchanan was really helpful to assist us on any questions that we had. While I was focusing on helping the students fill out their applications, Jose was helping the students plan out fund raising activities. We also got the chance to meet with the librarian about using the library for a small group of senior after school. Today after school, Jose and I will be attending Roosevelt again. We will be in the library helping out the seniors with their applications again. Although Mrs Buchanan won't be there to assist us, I'm sure we'll be able to work things out. I'm very excited and looking forward to meeting the new seniors. Catch all of you guys later. =)

HOLA MENTORS!
Today Yesenia and I had the honor to have our first Mentor meeting in Coalinga!WOOHOO. our meeting was great, a lot better than what we were expecting it to be, which was great. I am extremely excited to work with these students, and they seem to be exited also. :) In our meeting about 25 students attended so we hope that these student decide to stick with us for the whole school year. Yesenia and I will be attending Coalinga again this coming Tuesday during their lunch to try and recruit more students. We will have a booth out during lunch, which we got the great idea from the girls in Mendota(thanks). And our next actually meeting with the mentees will be this coming Friday on the 16th.
-Martina

Great work!!!!

Irene Buchanan wrote this about their mentors in Roosevelt- Keep up the good work we are proud of you!!!!!

They have been a godsend this week. The CAMP Program told us to get senior CSU applications in by next week, October 15th, and to doublecheck their accuracy. Jose and Pahnia are jumping right in helping seniors at lunch and want to be here for them tomorrow in the library after school (I'll be off campus for a conference). I am seeing that this could orient Jose & Panhia even more specifically to what to prepare their regular 9-11 mentor students for. One activity they might do is to get the 9-11th graders to input their grades to CSU Mentor, so that when they are seniors, the application will be that much easier because the grades will already be in. Also, when they heard me trying to help some AB540 seniors with fundraising ideas for the application fee, they offered to try to help them as well. I don't know if that fits in your guidelines, but their intentions are much appreciated. More immediately,it seems I'm being swamped with meetings and conferences right now, and we see that they will need an alternate classroom for meetings, especially when I have to be off campus. Next week, we hope to identify that room. Feel free to fill me in on anything I can do to help.
