Hello!

Hello Everyone,

I am glad that we already had the opportunity to be at a school site, and be part of a learning experience. Two weeks ago we were in Parlier (Martinez Elementary School) and it was a great start. The program and children all ran together smoothly. I enjoy the student contact that I have been working with, and I am excited to continue after the holidays are over. My team and I are currently recruiting more student for the ELD Intervention program in Parlier so we busy with that and cannot wait to start up the program again. So far this semester has been a great learning experience and I am excited to continue learning more next semester.

HELLO EVERYONE!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Patricia Figueroa and I’m working with at Parlier ELD-Intervention 6th-8th.

I would like to share my experience at Martinez Elementary School. The couple of days at Martinez were fantastic. I really enjoy working with the students. Since we were unable to contact many families, our class was really small. Our class was so small that the first day of instruction we only had eight students who attend.

Even though, we were there a couple of days, it was a great experience. The couple days that I went, gave the opportunity to meet the students, interact with them, and help them with their homework. I really felt so happy to see how the students were well-behaved, attentive, prepare, and ready to learn.

Although, we suspended the program due to the low number of students enrolled, we will begin on January 11, 2011. Meanwhile, all our Parlier mentors including myself, are working hard to recruit more students, hoping to get more students enroll to our program and benefit from it.

Thank you, everyone!! and good luck!

Great Start!

The first week that I started having contact with students was exciting and was looking forward to working with the Parlier students. Unfortunately, the program was cancelled until new notice. On our last day of working with Parlier, Rebecca informed me that I was going to be transferred to San Joaquin, Golden Plains District, under Maria's supervision. At first I was a little sad because I had already gotten used to working with my assigned team, but then I got used to the change that was made. I'm starting to learn a lot already!

Last week was my first week working with the San Joaquin students. Right on the first day I thought, “Well, this is going to be easier than I thought.” The students were behaving well and they were willing to cooperate. Little did I know that the next two days were going to be a little challenging.

On the first day there was a student in particular who grabbed my attention because he was willing to help his classmates, as well as willing to share his materials with the others. He became a different person the next day. He started the class doing really good, then when he would decide he did not want to do anything anymore, he would just shut down; he would not participate, pay attention to the teacher, or play/interact with the other students.

When we talked to his mom about it (with the student presence), she admitted that part of his behavior was her fault, and that she needed/wants help. I noticed that when the student was listening to his mom; he started smiling, not to make fun of her, but he seem content. Our team is going to continue to do everything we can to successfully help this student develop his skills/abilities to positively build his own future.

In just those few minutes that we interacted with the student’s parent, I came to realize something; I had forgotten how important a parent is for a child’s life. My goal, for when we go back from our break, is to have daily contact (or maybe once or twice a week) with the child’s parent to let them know how their child is doing. This will be regardless of whether the child is behaving properly or misbehaving. I’ll share this with our team to see what they think about it.

Hello everyone

We finally started working at Parlier, but then plans changed again and we will be returning to the schools next year. The days that I worked with the students were great; I had the opportunity to help with homework, to grade pre-assessments and to interact with students and their families.

I also went to the event at Fresno City College. I had the opportunity to interact with high school students and learn about the college awareness program and some of the services at Fresno City. I conducted a few interviews to the students, in which they expressed how much they learned and how much they liked this event. ..It was a success!!!!

I went to the training today and learned new ideas on how to deal with possible problems when doing phone calls or home visits. I learned that when contacting the families we need to be professional at all times, persistent when reaching out to our students, friendly, sensitive to different needs and be able to adapt to changes.

I will be doing some home visits this weekend; hopefully we can get more students to complete the pre-assessment and give out some flyers before our break.

Have a great Thanksgiving, be safe, spend quality time with your loved ones, and enjoy the food!!
