Hello!
I am glad that we already had the opportunity to be at a school site, and be part of a learning experience. Two weeks ago we were in Parlier (Martinez Elementary School) and it was a great start. The program and children all ran together smoothly. I enjoy the student contact that I have been working with, and I am excited to continue after the holidays are over. My team and I are currently recruiting more student for the ELD Intervention program in Parlier so we busy with that and cannot wait to start up the program again. So far this semester has been a great learning experience and I am excited to continue learning more next semester.

HELLO EVERYONE!
Hello Everyone,
My name is Patricia Figueroa and I’m working with at Parlier ELD-Intervention 6th-8th.
I would like to share my experience at Martinez Elementary School. The couple of days at Martinez were fantastic. I really enjoy working with the students. Since we were unable to contact many families, our class was really small. Our class was so small that the first day of instruction we only had eight students who attend.
Even though, we were there a couple of days, it was a great experience. The couple days that I went, gave the opportunity to meet the students, interact with them, and help them with their homework. I really felt so happy to see how the students were well-behaved, attentive, prepare, and ready to learn.
Although, we suspended the program due to the low number of students enrolled, we will begin on January 11, 2011. Meanwhile, all our Parlier mentors including myself, are working hard to recruit more students, hoping to get more students enroll to our program and benefit from it.
Thank you, everyone!! and good luck!

Great Start!
The first week that I started having contact with students was exciting and was looking forward to working with the Parlier students. Unfortunately, the program was cancelled until new notice. On our last day of working with Parlier, Rebecca informed me that I was going to be transferred to San Joaquin, Golden Plains District, under Maria's supervision. At first I was a little sad because I had already gotten used to working with my assigned team, but then I got used to the change that was made. I'm starting to learn a lot already!
Last week was my first week working with the San Joaquin students. Right on the first day I thought, “Well, this is going to be easier than I thought.” The students were behaving well and they were willing to cooperate. Little did I know that the next two days were going to be a little challenging.
On the first day there was a student in particular who grabbed my attention because he was willing to help his classmates, as well as willing to share his materials with the others. He became a different person the next day. He started the class doing really good, then when he would decide he did not want to do anything anymore, he would just shut down; he would not participate, pay attention to the teacher, or play/interact with the other students.
When we talked to his mom about it (with the student presence), she admitted that part of his behavior was her fault, and that she needed/wants help. I noticed that when the student was listening to his mom; he started smiling, not to make fun of her, but he seem content. Our team is going to continue to do everything we can to successfully help this student develop his skills/abilities to positively build his own future.
In just those few minutes that we interacted with the student’s parent, I came to realize something; I had forgotten how important a parent is for a child’s life. My goal, for when we go back from our break, is to have daily contact (or maybe once or twice a week) with the child’s parent to let them know how their child is doing. This will be regardless of whether the child is behaving properly or misbehaving. I’ll share this with our team to see what they think about it.

We finally started working at Parlier, but then plans changed again and we will be returning to the schools next year. The days that I worked with the students were great; I had the opportunity to help with homework, to grade pre-assessments and to interact with students and their families.
I also went to the event at Fresno City College. I had the opportunity to interact with high school students and learn about the college awareness program and some of the services at Fresno City. I conducted a few interviews to the students, in which they expressed how much they learned and how much they liked this event. ..It was a success!!!!
I went to the training today and learned new ideas on how to deal with possible problems when doing phone calls or home visits. I learned that when contacting the families we need to be professional at all times, persistent when reaching out to our students, friendly, sensitive to different needs and be able to adapt to changes.
I will be doing some home visits this weekend; hopefully we can get more students to complete the pre-assessment and give out some flyers before our break.
Have a great Thanksgiving, be safe, spend quality time with your loved ones, and enjoy the food!!

RAiSiN CiTY ELD
Well, last week I was at Raisin City Elementary with the ELD Intervention Program. Our team was there because our teacher wanted us to get familiar with the routine of our after school program.
It was a lot easier than I was thinking it was going to be. It makes me feel confident for when my school starts.
The students in class, over all, were well behaved. They were very respectful and they did their work and participated in the activities. I was in the A/B class, so the majority of the students were in 3rd-5th grade.
I got familiar with names and faces and the students also are learning our names. So far, it was a good week. There are a few things the teachers and the mentor need to work on, but with time Im sure that things will make more progress. Looking forward to this week!

jesus
the game is so much fun and i believe everyone played it at the leadership retreat,
because i know i did when i had that same retreat for camp.
well the object of the game is to huddle together with a certain number of students
so your boat doesn't sink. if for example, whoever ismaking the call yells out
"a boat of 6 is sinking" then you must try to get in a group of 6.
whichever group has more or less than 6, the whole group is out of the game.
until the game narrows down to 2, then those are the winners.
this is a very fun game to play with a lare group of people.
we should try it out sumtime =)
the only thing you need is a large group of students, someone making the call,
and a large open outdoor field.

HELLO EVERYONE!!
For any of the Mentors who visit high school students or any high school student blogger, you might want to check these links for admission application fee waivers, and AB540 exemption requests. The fee waiver can also be filled out on csumentor but you may also send it to the college's admission office. And don't forget that the recommended date to complete the csumentor application is by October 25th for early registration.

Also through collegeboard, you can ckeck out the college applications checklist. This walks our students step by step to making sure they have everything needed as far as tests, financial aid, a and deadlines.

Moreover,Rebecca has been doing such a great job !!guiding us and helping us through out this new experience for some of us that are new to the program.
All of us have accomplished many things in so little time! so lets keep it up!! and continue the good work!!!!
We Start Next Week..Yay!!!!!!
I want to acknowledge that Rebecca is a great teacher; she is organized and patient with her mentors and she has high expectations from us. She always has things for us to do, and we do not have time to stay behind, that’s a NO NO in our team.
We all have very good communication, we expect to make an impact in our students, and guide them in the right direction.

We are the ones who decide what's next!
We have practice some of the lessons that may be offered to the students. At first I thought it was going to be easy to teach to a group of students a lesson that we had created ourselves, but then once we had to presented to others, I realized that not everything had come out the way we would plan our lessons to be. So in this sense I learned that I will always have to be ready for last minute lesson plan changes.
Each of us has been assigned to a district. In my case, I’m not the only one assisting Golden Plains, I have a partner; his name is Jesus. Rebecca, our lead teacher, has done a great job on guiding us to get comfortable with each other. Thanks to our partner/group assignments, I now understand that regardless of the goal that our team receives, we will be able to successfully accomplish it simply because we can rely on each other to get the job done!
One very important concept that I have understood is that the kids that we are going to be working with, are going to be greatly affected by us, not only because we are going to be helping them navigate through part of the educational system, but because we are the ones who are also going to contribute in providing them the basic tools to learn how to become responsible for their own future.
I can even predict that the greatest satisfaction that I will have at the end of the program is going to have realize that the students have develop their capabilities beyond than what they have imagined themselves capable of. Believing in them is all it takes to make a difference in their lives.
Yes, I may be a little nervous, but at the same time I’m excited and eager to start working with the students! I hope that all of our goals are lofty because I know that we can accomplish anything if we all work as a team!

I am excited to start this year's program and meet my students in Parlier. These past weeks we have been preparing lessons and practicing them within our team. I learned a lot from the other mentors, who give positive feedback and good advice for future presentations. Once in our site I hope to help students academically, be a guide for them to accomplish their dreams, and make a difference in how they view themselves in the future.
Good luck to all!!

Every time I meet with the students, I get more excited at all the possibilities and opportunities that lay ahead of them! I know that this year will be successful because our mentors ROCK! I got really excited after our Credit Recovery Team meeting. So many great ideas were shared, and it was obvious that the mentors truly care about our students. Seriously. :)

I'm excited to start a new year of Mentoring for the 2010-2011 school year. I will be mentoring at Tranquility High School and I have so many plans and goals running through my head that I just want to jump right in there. I am enthusiastic about meeting my new mentees and working along with my partner to inspire these students once more. It's exciting to see some of the students from last year's mentoring program walking to their classes at the same college I go to. I hope we can do the same and more for Tranquility High School.

Migrant Pirates achieve club status

Like a mama bear protecting her cub, Reedley High School migrant students instinctively fought for their cause. They wanted a district-recognized club of their own, and did everything in their power to make it happen.“These kids were so excited about just having a place to meet,” advisor Doris Rosales said. “This was an area where they could actually speak how they felt.”Kings Canyon Unified School District trustees recently approved the school’s Migrant Club, allowing the group to participate in school activities, hold fundraisers and organize community service projects.“The club actually came from them,” Rosales said. “They didn’t feel like they could connect to other clubs as much as they connected here.”The road to club status began last fall, when the Fresno County Office of Education Migrant Program assigned a Fresno State student to mentor RHS migrants. Janeth Vega, a migrant herself, began by simply asking students about their goals.“She could relate to the kids really well,” Rosales said. Vega explained the requirements that students needed to meet to attain their goals, and why certain classes were important. She met with the children individually, reviewed their grades, and helped create personalized road maps for success. Vega and Rosales discovered the students had admirable goals, but didn’t know how to achieve them.“It’s interesting, because a lot of kids weren’t on track for their credits,” Rosales said. “We found out that many kids didn’t even pay attention to their grades, and didn’t know that you had to have credits in various topics.”Inspired by Vega’s mentorship, students began meeting informally to discuss their goals. They presented their idea for a club at last year’s migrant parent mini-conference at Reedley High, proudly calling themselves “Migrant Pirates.”The students agreed to leave negative influences behind and commit to academic success. They passed out sheets of paper for parents to sign their support, and created a poster board explaining their mission. Last May, the students elected club officers and listed 25 confirmed members on their application to the district.“We started with a small group of eight or nine the beginning part of the year to get migrant students to have a sense of belonging,” Rosales said. “From there, word got out among the students that they wanted to have a club. By the end of the semester, we had about 30 to 40 kids.”President Tania Alvarado said the club has boosted her confidence, allowing her to speak in front of large groups with ease. She learned about school graduation requirements, how to reach goals, and the importance of community involvement. Alvarado plans to apply for the nursing program at CSU Sacramento, and wants to organize fundraisers for college field trips.“It’s helped me a lot,” she said. “Before, I didn’t really think about what I wanted to do after high school.” Alvarado also wants to volunteer at local retirement homes, raise money for the needy, and clean up the community.Vice president Monica Ferreyra said the club not only explains graduation requirements, but the reasons behind them. “We take classes, but we don’t know why we are taking them – so we get behind,” she said. “I’m an AVID student so I know the requirements, but a lot of students don’t.”Ferreyra said that migrant students needed this club, and Vega inspired them to speak up. “She helped us come out of our quiet zone,” Ferreyra said. “Now we can help others with what we learned from her.” Club officers want to inform members about college requirements and scholarship information, and raise money to visit a college campus at the end of the year.Ferreyra plans to apply to UCLA and become a Spanish or Chicano teacher. She made the decision after taking a Spanish Native Speaker class at RHS. “I learned a lot of different things about my culture, and it made me want to learn more,” she said.Membership is open to migrant and non-migrant students, and students will decide what activities they want to focus on. Rosales said that members have expressed interest in community service, volunteering at school events, holding food drives and fundraising for field trips.“They’re going to be learning leadership skills that will help them develop as a person, and help their self-esteem,” Rosales said. Organizers plan to hold the first club meeting in September and continue once a week during lunch. They’ll gather in advisor Arnulfo Sanchez’s classroom, and identify worthwhile causes to address. Advisors plan to keep students on track academically with goal-setting discussions and progress checks. As part of the district’s new service agreement, advisors will offer an eight-week computer class to migrant parents, starting in October. They will explain the PowerSchool program, computer fundamentals and required student curriculum. “The parents are working so hard, that sometimes they’re not aware of all the requirements,” Rosales said.

Yesturday Pahnia and I went to kings canyon middle school and played the mafia game during lunch. All the students really liked the game and we will play again Friday since they requested it. The point of the game is see how there are times in life were we have to make decisions or others make decisions and were affected by them and have no control. The game is played with cards and it was my first time playing as well and I really enjoyed it. We also had our afterschool meeting and the session was about GPA calculation, clubs and what resources are available in highschool that they need to be aware of. We also discussed better study habits and they developed educational goals to improve their GPA's. We have scheduled our migrant party to say our goodbyes for April 7, 2010 afterschool.
Have a great spring break and I will report about Friday soon enough.

I wanted to tell you guys about our day at Tranquillity. Today we went in state of mind of doing team building activities with the students. At first we noticed that the students were very shy to participate because of the other students who may have been looking at them. But after getting started there was no way to stop them in their activities. Take a look for yourself. Below you will find pictures of the activities.
